The introduction of smartphones and tactile tablets has dramatically altered the habits of web surfers. Though the use of WAP technologies was anecdotal, 3G and high definition tactile screens have allowed a popularisation of mobile internet.

Beyond the initial novelty appeal, browsing the internet on their mobile phone has truly become an indispensable habit for some. Wherever you are, whenever you need, you can now access the internet in your hand!

This fact often gives rise to the idea of developing a mobile version of a website to greatly increase the number of visitors. However, if phones and tablets can display websites as well as traditional computers, why bother?

Size, adapted

Mobile development - Custom size.Mobile internet has developed rapidly, but desktop internet as well has kept a good pace. Screens are now bigger, even on laptops, often in "HD" (High Definition). Websites design has followed on the same trend, using the larger available space to increase the size of web pages and the contents they offer.

Mobile phones, for obvious reasons, keep a reasonably sized screen, albeit with very high definition displays. A traditional website is therefore displayed at a reduced size, and the visitor(s) must then zoom in and out in the page to get where they want.

On a website made for mobile phones, the visitor(s) can directly read pages, because they are automatically resized to their screen.

Information, adapted

In general, we use our mobile phone to go on the internet because we don't have a computer at hand. We often are searching for a precise piece of information and we want it quick, in a matter of seconds. Given their restricted size, mobile sites display less info on each page. This info which will have to be more to the point or split on several pages, which in either case allows the user to find it more quickly and more easily.

Visitors find the info they seek more quickly on a website that is made for mobile phones.

Reactivity, adapted

3G networks are now faster, allowing websites to load much more rapidly. The are however met with increasing demand from more and more users. Traditional websites can sometimes be painfully slow on 3G connections whose bandwidth is low.

It is then necessary to optimise webpages and associated media (images and videos) to send the most info even on a low-bandwidth connection.

By visiting such a website, the user can get a fast access whatever the circumstances.

QR CodeTools, adapted

The emergence of mobile internet has opened the door to new tools:

  • QR Code : It is a little black and white pictogram, allowing to code a URL (web address). Taking a picture of this code with a smartphone sends you directly on the given webpage without having to type in the URL. This code is a simple image. It is therefore simple to insert it on any type of graphic document (posters, real estate adverts on office windows, etc.)

  • NFC chips : This one is a chip, which, just like the QRCode, can hold a web address. Putting your phone at close proximity sends you to the coded webpage.

Without a keyboard or a mouse, we must adapt to touch screens and take advantage of them:

  • Portrait and landscape modes,
  • Slide to display all images of a gallery
